The project is being carried out by a team of students from the MAI Institute of Control Systems, Informatics and Electric Power Engineering under a Russian Science Foundation grant, based at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.
Young Russian researchers are developing an artificial intelligence-based software module designed to help prevent dangerous reactions in treatment regimens involving the simultaneous use of three or more medications. Doctors may prescribe this number of medicines to patients with cancer or multiple chronic conditions, the press service of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) told TASS.
“The technological foundation of the software module is a Bayesian network, a probabilistic model that takes into account multiple factors and the relationships between them. We determine how each medication affects a person based on its official prescribing information from the State Register of Medicinal Products. The system considers not only direct contraindications, but also situations in which several medications affect the same organ, potentially resulting in an overdose. After completing the analysis, the system assesses the overall risk,” said Yury Titov, the project’s scientific supervisor and associate professor at MAI’s Department of Computing Machines, Systems and Networks, as quoted in the statement.
How the Software Module Works
The software module is easy to use. A doctor enters the list of prescribed medications, as well as the patient’s age and sex, into the platform interface. The module then automatically analyzes the data: it checks for drug–drug interactions, assesses the risk of side effects based on the specified parameters, and identifies potentially dangerous combinations that could aggravate chronic conditions or reduce treatment effectiveness.
The results are displayed using a “traffic light” system: green indicates that the medications are compatible, yellow signals potential risks and the need for caution, while red indicates dangerous interactions or contraindications. In the latter case, an alternative treatment regimen is recommended.
During the first stage of testing, the database was populated with information on 92 commonly used medications for chronic heart failure and influenza. The researchers also identified 110 serious side effects that could occur when these medications are taken simultaneously. Testing of the module is ongoing. In the future, the developers plan to integrate the solution into various clinical information systems, such as EMIAS.

“According to World Health Organization statistics, the risk of side effects when taking two or three medications is approximately 39%; with four or five medications, it rises to 88%; and with six or seven medications, it reaches 100%. Plekhanov Russian University of Economics is developing a platform aimed at reducing the number of adverse drug reactions. It analyzes combinations of multiple prescribed medications and warns of potential health risks. The verification software module we are developing is an important component that makes the analysis and its results as clear and understandable as possible for physicians,” said Nikita Kilmishkin, the project’s author and a master’s student at the MAI Institute of Control Systems, Informatics and Electric Power Engineering.
